CAIR, CAIR-MA to Designate Harvard as ‘Hostile Campus’ Over Adoption of Anti-Free Speech, Anti-Palestinian Policies
On Thursday, Jan. 30, the national office and the Massachusetts chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, plan to hold a press conference to announce the designation of Harvard University as a “hostile campus” after the administration adopted new, anti-speech, anti-Palestinian policies that threaten to expand the persistent abuse of anti-genocide, anti-apartheid voices.

Donald Trump is reportedly planning to continue his violent crusade aimed at gutting freedom and democracy with an Executive Order today calling for the deportation of non-citizen anti-war activists, with a particular focus on students. This is a vile attempt to sow fear and crush political dissent to the U.S.-backed Israeli genocide of Palestinians in Gaza, as well as to further the far-Right’s broader anti-immigrant agenda. Should there be any attempt to enforce this authoritarian, unconstitutional, and violent executive order, we call on elected officials, university administrators, and all people of conscience to boldly reject these orders.

Trump Leans on WWII Japanese Incarceration Law to Deport Immigrants
The Alien Enemies Act provides sweeping powers to detain or deport foreign nationals and is ripe for abuse, according to experts. The archaic law discriminates against immigrants based on their country of citizenship and, more broadly, based on their ancestry. It also requires no evidentiary thresholds and provides no due process protections, like the right to a hearing or the right to appeal.

Trump’s Plan to Crush the Academic Left
Michelle Goldberg writes of MAGA's campaign to crush the academic left, with its current focus on Harvard. I would argue that as an academic institution, while Harvard certainly has many progressive folks and policies and excellent forward thinking research and resources, that as an institution it has historically not been a bastion of liberalism. Hence its rapid capitulation to false accusations of antisemitism, cancellations of speakers, and threatened expulsions and deportations of students is not unexpected. This is the new McCarthyism and the death of First Amendment rights.
